Produced Interface Chemistry to Improve the Strength of Graphite Composites Cured by...

The new reactive sizing was designed to achieve very good levels of interfacial adhesion and advanced mechanical properties with a carbon fiber products-acrylate system cured by electron illumination (EB). The sizing was made of a typical partially cured epoxy sizing possessing high density of pendant functional mailing lists (acrylate functionality) to facilitate covalent bonding with the matrix. The interlaminar shear strength improved from sixty one MPa to 81 MPa (+ 33 %) without post-processing, getting to a shear strength similar to that of the particular same system cured by a thermal treatment method. Observation of the fracture profiles appears highlighted a change in the fracture procedure from a purely adhesive failure as opposed to a cohesive failure. Such improvements on this mechanical properties of carbon fiber batard cured by EB, without any post-cure, have not been reported previously to qualify for the best of our knowledge. This makes a breakthrough for the industrial development of batard EB curing.
